1A quick comparison
| Type | Often chosen for | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Hardwood | Living areas and bedrooms | Can dent and react to moisture; many can be refinished. |
| Laminate | Budget-minded rooms | Usually not for wet spaces; edges swell if water gets in. |
| Vinyl plank | Kitchens, baths, basements | Water resistant; needs a flat subfloor. |
| Tile | Baths, entries, kitchens | Hard and cold; grout needs care; needs a stiff base. |
| Carpet | Bedrooms and stairs | Soft and warm; holds dust and stains. |
2Think about the room
Ask which room it is, how wet it gets, and who walks on it. A floor that is perfect in a bedroom can be wrong near a back door.
3The subfloor matters
Uneven or damp subfloors cause squeaks, gaps and failures. Ask what preparation is included, such as leveling, moisture testing and underlayment.
4Samples and lighting
Look at samples in your own room, in daylight and at night, next to your cabinets and walls. Photos and store lighting can change how a color reads.
5Questions worth asking
- What is the warranty, and what does it exclude?
- Is moving furniture and removing the old floor included?
- How long must the floor acclimate before installation?
